Can You Change the Primary Column in Smartsheet?
Short answer: no. Smartsheet fixes the primary column when the sheet is created, and there is no setting anywhere that moves that designation to a different column afterwards. That is genuinely a product limitation, not a hidden menu. What you can do is rename it, swap what it holds, or rebuild the sheet — and which of those you want depends on why you asked.
What the primary column is for
Every sheet has exactly one primary column, and Smartsheet leans on it well beyond the grid. It acts as the row's label: it supplies card titles in Card and Board View, entry titles in Calendar View, and the first thing a recipient sees when you send a row or request an update. It is also what displays the parent-child structure when you indent rows.
That is why it is locked down. Because so many views read from it, letting it move would quietly re-caption every card, calendar entry and update request in the sheet.
What you cannot change
Per Smartsheet's own documentation, on an existing sheet you cannot:
- Re-designate a different column as the primary column — once it is set, it is set.
- Delete the primary column from the sheet.
- Add a second primary column.
- Change its column type. The primary column is always Text/Number; every other type, including Auto-number, is unavailable for it.
What you can change
If you are an Owner or Admin, you can rename it — double-click the header text and type a new name (renaming a column is a structural change, so Editors cannot). This is the one primary-column property Smartsheet lets you edit, and for most people asking the question it is actually the whole fix: the column is called "Primary Column" or "Task Name" and they want it to say something else.
You can also replace what it contains, which is the closest thing to a real workaround. On forms, you can even remove the primary column from the form canvas — though it still populates on submission.
Swap the contents instead (the documented workaround)
If what you really want is "the values in column B should be my row labels", you do not need to move the designation — you need to move the data. Smartsheet documents this sequence:
- Insert a new column next to the primary column.
- Select and cut the primary column's contents.
- Paste them into the new column, so the original values are preserved rather than lost.
- Enter the content you want as your row labels into the now-empty primary column.
When you actually need a different primary column
If the swap above is not enough — you genuinely need a different field to be the designated primary column — the only route is a new sheet, because the designation is fixed when the sheet is created. Build the new sheet, set the field you want as its primary column, then move your rows across. One thing even a rebuild cannot do: make the primary column an Auto-number. The Text/Number rule holds in every sheet, new ones included, so if what you want is an auto-incrementing ID, add it as its own Auto-number column and leave the primary as your Text/Number label.
Weigh that carefully before you start: a rebuild leaves the old sheet's reports, cross-sheet references, automations and shares pointing at the original. It is a real migration, not a settings change, and for most cases renaming plus a contents swap gets you what you needed without one.
Renaming the primary column across many sheets
Renaming is per sheet, so if the same badly-named primary column exists in twenty sheets built from the same template, that is twenty header edits. Our Rename Columns tool applies old-to-new name mappings across every sheet you select in one reviewable pass, and it renames the primary column just like any other. You see the full plan before a single header changes, and only headers change — the values underneath are untouched.
Do it in one pass instead
Rename and standardize Smartsheet column headers across many sheets in a single, reviewable pass instead of editing each sheet by hand.
Try Rename Columns FreeFrequently asked questions
Can you change the primary column in Smartsheet?
No. The primary column is set when the sheet is created and cannot be re-designated to a different column afterwards. You can rename it, and you can replace its contents, but the designation itself cannot be moved.
Can you delete the primary column in Smartsheet?
No. Every sheet must have exactly one primary column, so it cannot be deleted and a second one cannot be added. The only way to end up with a different primary column is to build a new sheet and move your rows across.
Can the primary column be a dropdown, date or auto-number column?
No. The primary column type is always Text/Number, and every other column type — including Auto-number — is unavailable for it. If you need an auto-numbered row identifier, add it as a separate column alongside the primary one.
